Presentation of the IOM

The radio-controlled IOM (International One Metre) sailing boat is large enough to give you the right feeling of sailing, but still small enough to be easy to transport to regattas all over the world. The boat and the rig box fit in a car, but if you need to travel long distances, you can bring it as sports equipment on an airplane.

The IOM is controlled via only two channels – one for the steering and one for the sheeting. The hulls can be made of GRP, wood or 3D-printed material. Carbon is not allowed elsewhere than in the fin, rudder and some fittings. You can design and build your own boat as long as it is according to the rules, but there are also some manufacturers of “Ready to race” boats. The same goes for the sails for the IOM boat.

IOM sailing is best when you sail among others. If you are interested, try to find an active club near you and join the community. If you cannot find information regarding clubs nearby, you can contact the country representative in your country, who you can find here. Or if there is no activity, hook up with some friends and start sailing!
