Coming of age

Post by Andy Stevenson » 14 Jan 2009, 13:41

Greetings all

I have been made aware that the IOM class reaches its 21st birthday this year. I’d be interesting in peoples thought on how best to celebrate such a milestone?

Cheers

There must be an exact date when the class became recognized. We should all try to have a regatta the same day to celebrate and then we can maybe brag that we had more IOMs on the water all over the world than maybe has ever happened for any other class.

We could all send our results in and then maybe we could post the names of everyone that sailed for the birthday celebration.

Good idea, but regatta's schedule for 2009 is certainly made all other the world now...

When is this date?

That's true for a lot of events but for some of us we can be a bit flexible (I'm talking about club level events now) and sail almost any weekend we want. So if we had a target date my guess is that a good number of clubs could have a "Birthday Sail".

Any idea what that date might be???

If we can agree upon a date we could promote that event.

In Norway we have a race 21 of june, the same time as the racing in the WC starts, I know that in Spain they are going to have their regional Catalonian championship.

Wouldnt it be great if we could have a race all over the world at the same time as the WC started???????

I can put this up on IOM-nordic and also publish the results from all over the world.......

I guess for the benefit of the most it would be good to pick a date between May and October to make the best chance for liquid water everywhere.

It would be even better if the real birthday fell in that time frame as well. But a world wide IOM day would be a great thing to brag about.

What happened with this topic????

I sugest that the Exec promotes a date for a world wide race day, unless this will die quietly.

I kind of liked the idea of the rest of us sailing while the Worlds starts up.

We have booked a site for June 21 and will have that no matter what but would be glad to have another on some common date.

I would also volunteer to gather results, entry lists or whatever is appropriate to document who sailed on "our" birthday.

I'm not sure where other people fall on the question, but as a personal matter I don't (i) think the class's "21st birthday" is as significant as the 25th anniversary. To me "21st birthday" is like "Sweet 16" it belongs to people not things; and (ii) see much point in the idea of having everyone try to be on the water in a race on the same day. Doesn't really move my needle, but I'm just one person.

As an alternative I like the idea of starting now to put together a special 25th Anniversary Regatta and perhaps a logo celebrating 25 years of the IOM class that can be used for patches, stickers, hats, shirts, etc.

Just my feelings. If there is strong sentiment for some sort of 21st Birthday event, I'm sure it can be organized.

I kind of agree with Roy in this matter, 25, 50 75 and so forth are the celebration dates, I have a feeling that 21 is connectet to US. We in Norway don't have any celebration at 21.

BUT I am in favor of a common day all over the world to put up a celebration race when the class is 25.

We can put up a trial celebration race just to see how it works, is it possible?

Yes I believe it is, but the initiative must come from the excec. It must be promoted on the IOM ICA website. And I believe direct contact to all the NCA excecutives must be taken in order to get this running.

I'm kind of good with the idea of pre-arranging something more in connection with the 25th anniversary. Anniversaries are likely more in keeping for these boats than brirthdays.

But, as it is always good to have some excuse, we will have a 21st birthday sailing around here for our favorite boats and enjoy a beer or two on behalf of our boats.
