INTERPRETATION ON THE INTERNATIONAL ONE METRE CLASS RULES

Interpretation requested by the AMYA, U.S.A. as follows:
Is it permitted to tension a jackstay/luffline of an IOM mast enough to hold a pre-bent mast straight?

Relevant rules
International One Metre Class Rules F.5.2(b)(3) ; F.2.4(b) ; F.2.3

Discussion
The mast spar jackstay is defined as standing rigging by class rule F.5.2(b)(3)

Length and tension of rigging may be adjustable unless otherwise restricted as stated in class rule F.2.4(b).

The function of items shall be limited to what is normally provided by items of their type as stated in class rule F.2.3.

Decision
The normal function of the jackstay is to fasten mainsail to the mast and jackstay must be engineered accordingly. The mast jackstay needs to be tensioned/adjusted in order to fasten mainsail to and this tension may contribute to bending/straightening the mast.
