Re: The size of a vang/kicking strap ... discussion
1. I agree it is correct to conclude that the owners want a limit on vang area. 2. I think it is incorrect to conclude that the votes to date, imply that a majority favour allowing the Viss vang. Suppose you had a new town with no speed limits and all of the residents would like a 50KPH speed limit....

Re: The size of a vang/kicking strap ... discussion
If the Viss vang were ruled out of class that would be a problem for all the new Viss owners to fix. I’m not happy about that. On the other hand, I think the Viss vang is likely faster … an innovation as they say. I have 4 IOM’s each with 3 rigs. I will need to get 12 new Viss vangs to compete. Each...

Re: The size of a vang/kicking strap ... discussion
In this photo I add a red line where a normal wire hook vang with a thin barrel might fit. Perhaps the “hockey stick” shape is not needed for the Viss to control leech tension? Vang angles beyond 45 degrees only minorly reduce vang tension.

Re: The size of a vang/kicking strap ... discussion
I hope SRC does not mind me borrowing this photo from their site?
I think this picture gives a good view of the concern to sailors, which is the area exposed when sailing downwind. Is it ok? Or is it too much?

Re: The size of a vang/kicking strap ... discussion
1. Instead of measuring areas, it might be easier to just apply the method of rule F2.4(d) and limit the maximum cross section dimension at right angles to the axis of rotation. 2. The key question to me though is “do the majority of owners think the Viss vang is OK or not” 3. If you think the Viss ...

Re: 2025 AGM - Resolutions and proposals
Here is the constitution section on not paying subscriptions. 16.3 A World Council Member shall be removed from membership 16.3.1. During any period in respect of which it has not paid its subscription or other monies due to the IOM ICA. Such membership may be renewed with immediate effect by paymen...

Re: Kicking strap 2025 AMG
Perhaps another way forward would be to vote against all the vang rule proposals (except the USA proposal) which would return us to the pre-Viss rule in regard to vang area. The technical committee could then propose an emergency rule that properly restricts the design of vangs to not increase “sail...

Re: 2025 AGM - Video Funding
Another thought on video funding: As I said before, It seems to me that promo videos are not a key function of the IOMICA and the funding should not be forced on all IOM owners. I think videos are not effective promotion of the class, which I define as drawing new members but is fantastic entertainm...

Re: 2025 AGM - Resolution to have Worlds Video Levy
Comment on member levy for World Video. This proposal may cause Canada to lose its World Championship invitation for failure to pay dues. First, I would like to say that the videos of recent IOM Worlds and other IOM events have been fantastic viewing. Unfortunately for our club, I would have to say ...
