I think Charlie Wahl has it pretty much right. Fact is most innovations are not explicity covered in the rules as written. If we recognize this fact, then we have to decide, do we want these open questions to be decided by the technical committee "interpreting" the rules or by vote of the class memb...

Here we go again... Actually, I think this issue is a great opportunity for the class to approach things in a better way. I think this issue should not be decided by the technical committee "interpreting" the rules, but by the class members. An open discussion should be first held here on the IOMICA...

Very good points David. I would love to hear an analysis of the claimed benefits of this jib attachement system. I also think it would be appropriate to invite disucssion among the class members about this system and then vote on whether it should be permitted. It would seem to me that if this syste...

IOM 2005 World's Review and DeBrief
I guess its time to start talking about the positives and negatives and what was learned from the 2005 IOM World Championships. Let me start the ball rolling by saying how great the host committee was. Wonderful site. Great organization. Can't thank the organizers enough for the vast amount of effor...

Lester: In your attempt to give a "history" lession on what happened with texalium boats, you have focussed totally on the past and ignored the issue in front of us--what do we do now? So let me simply repeat my suggestion, mirrored by Barry Fox in his post, that we put this issue to the class membe...

Complicated isn't it? Well not really. The "texalium" issue was never voted on because the whole problem started with a rule "interpretation" by our technical committee. The technical committee not the World Council "interpreted" texalium illegal. After this technical commitee ruling, the IOMICA Exe...

Yes, Lester you have this completely wrong. I think that the "packaging" of a large number of rules changes together with no opportunity to vote on or consider those changes individually lead to the voting down of the entire package. I also think that the IOM class vote also reflected a desire to st...

It seemed to me that the intent from the Class Meeting in Australia was that all of the old rules should remain in force until the new Executive and World Council settle in. I would expect that they will have a set of proposals to deal with any potential problems in the near future. BTW, I think if ...

A Brief Candidate Statement
I thought it was worthwhile to post a brief statement as to why I have put my name forward for the IOM Technical positon. Mainly, I believe the class needs a change in direction and attitude. I believe that the role of the Technical Sub Committee should be to serve the needs of the class owners and ...

I've got to say that Mark Cooper's post below brings this discussion into focus. I've always thought "rules" and "procedures" where meant to make things better. When the rules become an end to themselves or lead to nothing but frustration and disagreement, something is wrong. Mark is the voice of co...

Lester: You have raised a number of issues, to respond in no particular order: Regarding the quetion of class democracy and free discussion of ideas, I think raising the issue of the RSD is an important one. As I am sure you recall, one of the things promised in Vancouver prior to the formation of I...

Lester: I posted this on the US IOM site, I'm going to re-post it here, First, you say that the "ban" on Texalium and the "grandfathering" of built boats has already been incorporated in the IOM rules. Second, you state that nevertheless the class must now vote on this issue. Third, you have include...

Lester: I must take strong exception to your recent post. One of the fundamental principles of democracy (and a healthy organization) is the right to question authority. There is nothing improper in asking how a descision was made or from what person an idea originated. Finally, I remind you that on...

IOMICA VOTING PROCESS
Just wanted to ask how the voting at the IOM Worlds is to be run. Specifically, are the rule changes being put up for vote subject to amendment or modification? Further, to the extent an NCA does not support all of the proposed rule changes that are "packaged" together, can the sections be voted on ...

Just to put to rest any doubts, it would be nice if someone from the Technical Committee would respond here to Brad's inquiry and explain the source and evolutuion of this proposal since it did not originate as a request from any NCA. It would certainly be better in the future that when issues like ...

It appears to me that the principal motive behind the proposed rule change regarding pigmented fiberglass is to prevent "unscrupulous builders" from trying to cheat and pass off carbon fiber as fiberglass. However, from the persepective of a person with a few years of legal experience I can state wi...

Anders: I think you missed a significant part of Brad Gibson's post. The plain and simple fact is that the proposed rule change will make future manufacture of his "Disco" impossible without significant re-engineering they may or may not be possible. Further, Brad points out that un-pigmented fiberg...

Lester's anaylsis of a possible problem occurring sometime in the future if "black glass" were to be used in IOMs is excellent. However, the solution to this prospective problem in my opinion is way too broad. The proposed total ban of colored fiberglass ignores the fact that pigmented fiberglass tu...

I second the thought put forth by Ralph Kelly that the rules should be changed to permit the use of carbon fiber and fiberglass tubes for rudder posts, beams or reinforcement. At the very least the proposed new rule should be made not applicable to pigmented fiberglass tubes. Frankly, I don't think ...

I've now seen the Spektrum system used by a number of people in a number of races. First, the convenience is great. No more worries about available frequencies. Second, as others have said it appears that the positioning of the antenna is critical. Seems that if the receiver antenna is not vertical,...

Steve: I think the policy on carry on has changed. Last two trips I was told about the current "no tools" on the plane rule. This meant they seized from me a couple of two inch, blunt headed micro allen wrenches. I have a feeling under that policy a radio and charger and wires has a real good shot o...

In the US it would be next to impossible to carry on an r/c transmitter. It likely fits within the "no tools on board" ban. However, I've taken my radio numerous times in checked luggage and there has never been a problem. One thing to do is to try to check in a little early to give them time to tal...
